| General MMORPG News: Worm Closes Second Life |
| Poster : Alex Mars | 12:56 AM |
The online community/game Second Life, where players can earn real world dollars for in-game activities, was shut down due to a worm attack. When game actions can earn real money are the publishers and developers vulnerable to legal action when server problems wipe out gains made by the players? In addition, before the worm there was a duping bug, which must have damaged the economy. One has to wonder about the long term viablity of Second Life. | Virtual Land Lawsuit (General MMOG News) |
| Poster : Alex Mars | 10:07 PM |
The game Second Life mixes real world dollars with a virtual economy. Now the developers and administrators of Second Life are the target of a real world lawsuit that alleges that they took real money and failed to provide the virtual property that they had promised. The developers and administrators claim that the plaintiff used an exploit in their game. Using real world money in MMOGs started when players decided that it was convenient to pay another player to acquire their Hackmaster +12 or Prancing Pink Pony rather than spend the time required to gain it on their own. Virtual real estate sales originated in the MMOG Ultima Online, where there is not enough virtual land for all players on a server to own a piece of property and build a house or castle. | Stray Bullet to take over |
| Poster : jackherer | 2:15 AM |
From Ashen's site courtesy of Nadric(Dreg)... "From the ashes of Wolfpack Studios, a new company has formed called Stray Bullet Games (SBG). Unlike Wolfpack, SBG is not a Ubisoft company. Instead it is a Third-Party Development Studio. This basically means the studio is, technically, answerable to itself. I say technically because, obviously if a studio undertakes a contract from a publisher, that publisher will be making payments and will garner them at least some say in the project they are contracting for. Which brings us to Shadowbane. Ubisoft has contracted Stray Bullet Games to keep Shadowbane alive and well. Since SBG is not a Ubisoft company, things will be a little different than it was with Wolfpack Studios. For the most part, these changes will be transparent to players. Is Shadowbane the only thing Stray Bullet Games is working on? At this point I cannot go into much detail but there are other things in the works. Stray Bullet Games definitely does not plan on being a one-trick pony. And, of course, we have the goal of designing and crafting our very own next-generation MMO." |
